In fact, Costa Rica is home to more than 5 percent of the whole world’s biodiversity even though its landmass accounts for only 0.03 percent of the earth’s surface. But it’s not all just thick rainforests and incredible wildlife; Costa Rica is also known for their gorgeous beaches and captivating volcanoes. There is an endless amount of reasons why Costa Rica is one of the most sublime countries in the world, yet they still have numerous environmental, economic, and social issues that need our attention and assistance.

Itinerary

Day 1

Meet the Lift Our Planet team at the San Jose (SJO) airport. We’ll chat about the program and escort you to the hotel. When we arrive, you’ll have some time to settle in and independently explore San Jose. Join a walking tour and take in the beauty of the city. In the evening you’ll join us for the official Volunteer Welcome Dinner!

Day 2

After breakfast, we’ll take a journey to the Caribbean coast, where our boat captain will transport us to the Pacuare Research Station. Start your training and receive a safety briefing during the project overview. Then begins your first turtle conservation shift! Work with local coordinators and conservation biologists to monitor the nests and hatchlings in the hatchery.

Day 3 - 4

Continue your work as a sea turtle conservation volunteer. Patrol the beach looking for nesting adult turtles, maintain the station and hatchery, and clean up the beach. In the evening, we’ll help carefully release baby turtles into the ocean to join their natural habitat.

Day 5

We start the day off early, saying goodbye to the turtles and Pacuare’s amazing staff. We’ll head back to the mainland and enjoy the day in Puerto Viejo. The day is open to explore all the town has to offer, including beautiful black sand beaches, chocolate tours, or a self guided hike through the Gandoca-Mananillo Wildlife Refuge.

Day 6

Soak up the sun and bask in the Caribbean vibes however you’d like! Visit the sloth sanctuary and learn about their diminishing rainforest habitat. Rent a bicycle, take a surf lesson from a local instructor, or face your fears on the zip-line! Our staff is there to make your day as relaxing as possible!

Day 7

Enjoy breakfast in Puerto Viejo and pack your bags! We’re heading back to San Jose and checking into our hotel for our last day in Costa Rica. Adventure out with your new LOP family to explore exciting markets and interesting shops. Stop for some souvenirs and local cuisine!

Day 8

Say goodbye to your fellow volunteers and travel to the airport to return home! A Lift Our Planet staff member will escort you to the airport and assist you in checking in for your flight.
